Living in Taiwan you hear the funniest things when people are trying to speak English. (Don't get me wrong; I constantly mess up things in Chinese.) It is really hard not to laugh, especially when it's your students. I don't know how many times my little 2-4 years olds have asked me "Teacher my I have sex, please?" Translation: May I have six, please? or "the Taipei 101 is going to blow up tonight!" Translation: They are going to shot fireworks off of the Taipei 101.
I especially look forward to reading the comments that the parents make to me in our kindergarten Communication Books. Several of the parents think of the Chinese and look word for word up in the dictionary in order to translate it. Something like this...
Dear Rebecca:
Many thinks to the guidance (Student's name) of your zeal. Although we didn't deliver plenty of time to be requesting the kid's homework, still expect Rebecca just as teach my kid usually. To see the kid's growth will make the person exultant with pleased matter. I think Rebecca also has same viewpoint! Thank You very much!
Oh, Taiwan.
